Construction is one of the most male-dominated industries in the world. Of the 10.3% of women making up the construction workforce, 76% of those hold office jobs. And, only 13% of all construction firms are owned by women. But with rapid growth ahead—and nearly 2 million new jobs projected by 2021—women are breaking barriers and narrowing the gender gap in traditionally male-dominated construction careers.
The skilled craft workforce is evolving in a number of ways as it actively welcomes diversity and new technology. To help overcome obstacles including wage gaps, gender discrimination, and leadership gaps, there are a number of growing resources for women working in, or seeking a career in, construction. Women-focused groups such as Women Construction Owners & Executives USA, Women in Operations, and the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) provide mentorship and networking opportunities.
Leaders like Kimberly Davids of The Weitz Company are breaking glass ceilings while helping to elevate women in the workplace. “Being the first female General Manager in The Weitz Company’s 165-year history allows me to continue my passion for leading people and helping them grow throughout their careers. I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for certain people who helped mentor me along the way. Before taking on the role as General Manager, I held several managerial and leadership titles, so I was ready to take on the next challenge,” she says.
“I am a firm believer that if you show up to work, ask questions, and be the best teammate, employee, and coworker you can be, your efforts will get recognized and opportunities will present themselves. There tends to be shock when certain individuals realize that I am ‘the boss,’ but once we start to engage and communicate, they understand why I am in this role and provide me with the same amount of respect—if not more—than anyone else with the same title.”
