Looking Back at Arizona’s 5 Biggest Construction Projects in 2019

When it comes to construction, 2019 was one of the largest years on record for Arizona. Freeways were expanded, parks were built, resorts were designed out of dirt lots, businesses of all sizes grew and built new locations, residential neighborhoods and new communities were created – and that’s just the beginning.

Take a look back at Arizona’s five biggest construction projects in 2019.

  1. Gilbert Regional Park

Offering six sprawling tennis courts, eight pickleball courts, a splash pad and play structure that is disability-friendly, the Gilbert Regional Park project spans 272 acres, all with the goal of accommodating the influx of new residents in the area. And that’s not all – this project is the sister to The Strand, a 25-acre water park opening adjacent to the project in the summer of 2021.

Cost: $100M

  1. State Route 189

Nogales’ Interstate 19 and the Mariposa Port of Entry has long been in need of an essential roadway and connecting point – State Route 189 does just this. The two-year project includes flyover ramps to ease North-South transition and road safety, improved drainage and modern traffic signal installation.

  1. Desert Diamond West Valley Casino

As the city of Glendale continues to expand their entertainment district, the city’s Desert Diamond West Valley Casino also continues to grow. This expansion project will double the size of the casino, transforming the property to 135-acres of casino, spa and resort space. What additions will you now see? A 75,000 sq. ft. restaurant space, two new parking garages and new space for classic table games like poker and live bingo.

  1. Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway)

Arizona’s Loop 202, also known as the South Mountain Freeway, had 22 miles of road added the existing freeway, with the goal of easing traffic buildup from the I-10 and connecting the East and West Valleys. This is the largest single highway project in Arizona history, and a complex one – more than 1M tons of asphalt and 150,000 cu. yards of concrete were used in the project. This project is slated for final completion in 2020.

Cost: $1.7B
