A Day in the Life of a Skilled Professional

A Day in the Life of a Skilled Professional

A few months ago, Build Your Future AZ asked three hardworking skilled professionals  what a typical day looks like in their career fields.

Meet Oscar Montano, Adrian Tena, and Ricardo Yanez, three of the people who are building Arizona’s future.

Oscar, Adrian, and Ricardo are early risers. They wake up early in the morning, kiss their families goodbye, and arrive on the jobsite by 5:30 or 6:00am when the world is quiet, and the sun is just peeking over the horizon.

When they arrive, they are greeted by a work team who they consider family. The whole crew works hard, supports each other, and enjoys working side by side every day.

Ricardo Yanez said it best himself: “The people I work with are good guys, all around.”

Unlike a regular 9-5 office job, no two workdays are the same.

While one day may be spent laying a strong foundation on the ground, another may be spent working high up on scaffolding. For Oscar Montano, this is a big perk of the job.

“I’m not the type of person that likes to go to the same place, same office, sit in the same chair… I’m just way too active.” -Oscar M.

For all three men, the construction sciences offer just enough variety to keep coming to work fun. Everyday is different. They are constantly challenged to try new things.

Oscar and Ricardo work in jobs that require physical labor. They work hard and move their bodies all day long. Adrian Tena supervises construction sites. Most of his work is completed on tablets and computers. His job is to ensure every member of the work crew is safe and keep the team on track toward project goals.

Midway through the shift, the crew breaks for lunch. Some men go out to eat, but others, like Oscar, prefer a home cooked, healthy meal. After lunch, it’s a straight shot to the end of the day.

Since the workday starts early, Oscar, Ricardo, and Adrian get home in time to have dinner with their families. They talk about their day together, enjoy time with their wives and children, and go to bed with a sense of accomplishment.

“I go home at the end of the day and think, Oh man. Look what I’ve done.” -Oscar Montano

“I like the challenges in my day. Everyday you learn something new.” -Adrian Tena

“Ever since I’ve got this job, it’s been a lot easier to help my family. I love coming to work.” -Ricardo Yanez

Oscar, Adrian, and Ricardo are just three out of hundreds of thousands skilled professionals who work hard everyday to build Arizona’s future.

By 2022, there will be 155,000 job openings in the construction sciences, and new skilled tradesmen will need to step in to fill their shoes.

That’s 155,000 early risers.

155,000 hard workers.

155,000 family men and women with a vision to build a better future.
